Christmas markets in Berlin, Germany
This post we are throwing it all the way back to 2014 when my boyfriend and I went to Berlin to see the German Christmas markets.
how long do you need in Berlin at Christmas?
Like my Paris trip it we spent a long weekend in Berlin. I find that a long weekend is enough time to spend in a European city. This is because you are walking everywhere and packing everything in that, it can be quite exhausting to spend any longer than a few days sightseeing.
What we did in Berlin
Most of our time in Berlin was spent visiting museums in the day and going to the German Christmas markets at night. We visited most the tourist sites in Berlin such as: the Jewish Memorial, the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie and we also went up the Berlin dome which Sam was terrified of! We also visited Berlin zoo which I do not recommend it as in my opinion it was cruel.
The German Christmas markets in Berlin
The German Christmas markets are dotted all around the city. Each one offering a slightly different atmosphere and stalls however, on the most
part they are very similar. The Frankfurt Christmas market is Germany’s oldest, biggest and most beautiful. The Christmas market spreads across the historic old town in Berlin. To really get the perfect atmosphere I would recommend visiting them in the evening. This way you can see all the beautiful twinkling fairy lights which really make it something special.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINTER WONDERLAND AND GERMAN MARKETS
I visited Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park last Christmas and it was nothing like the German Markets. The German Markets tend to have a lot of emphasise on buying gifts and food. Whereas, Winter Wonderland is all about the fairground rides and some food. I would say the traditional German markets are 100% better and well worth a visit if you can.
