The Monkey Sanctuary, Looe, Cornwall
Hello everyone, todays post is all about The Monkey Sanctuary located in Looe, Cornwall. I’m a huge animal lover and not a fan of zoo’s, so going to the Monkey Sanctuary was a great compromise. I got to see all the monkey’s but knowing they had been rescued made me feel like my money was going to a great cause, and it was.
About the sanctuary
The sanctuary is small but we stayed there for 4 hours. At each enclosure there are keepers telling you all about the monkeys and the work that they do. The stories of some of the rescued monkey’s are so sad. It’s unbelievable that in the United Kingdom it is still legal to keep monkeys as pets. If you want to sign the petition I signed to stop the keeping of primates as pets, you can find it here.
The cafe
The Monkey Sanctuary also has a great Vegetarian tree top cafe! Woohoo. Everything was veggie, we had the choice of sausages, burgers, falafels, soups, sandwiches and even vegan cakes and ice creams (which I definitely took an advantage of). The Booja Booja ice cream I had was delicious and the best vegan ice cream I’ve had, although I have had not had many opportunities to try many as I am very limited in Cornwall. My favourite flavour was the raspberry ripple but that’s because generally I am not a fan of chocolate ice cream. Although, my
boyfriend did say that the vegan chocolate ice cream was better than normal chocolate ice cream!
The garden
The Monkey Sanctuary also had a lovely garden full of wildlife that overlooks the sea. The gardens had an insect house which you could definitely tell was working as you can see from my shots of the butterflies and bees. The first butterfly you can see I took photos of stayed on that same flower for about 10 minutes feeding. I have never been able to get so close to a butterfly and observe it that closely. I could see it’s long tongue feeding on the pollen, if you look closely you may be able to see it in the photographs too. It was amazing, I have never seen anything like it!
I will leave a link to the Monkey Sanctuary so you can check it out for yourselves. If you’re holidaying in Cornwall I would recommend taking a visit. While you’re in the area you may also want to check out the fishing town of Looe.
Lots of love, Melissa x
